Meditation
———————
"There’s in every living being
a thirst for limitlessness.”
– Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti
Why to meditate ?
We are never truly content with the finite: an object, an accomplishment, or a passing pleasure may offer momentary joy, but it cannot provide enduring fulfillment. Only infinite happiness can completely fulfill us.
Meditation is the practice that expands our consciousness and leads us to experience deep peace, mental clarity, and ever-increasing joy that does not depend on external circumstances.
A discipline for true freedom
Meditation is a living science, precise enough to be learned step by step in a very methodical way, yet wonderfully exciting and spacious enough to grow with us for a lifetime.
When we meditate every day, at a fixed time, with sincerity and patience, something quietly shifts internally. We find that we can choose where to place our attention. We are less at the mercy of our own restlessness, and this is the gift that meditators speak of most often: not a dramatic transformation, but a slow, steady expansion of an inner space where infinite love can grow.
Our meditation system
At the heart of our practice is mantra meditation—the silent repetition of a Sanskrit sound that gradually stills the mind and draws awareness inward toward the concept of infinite love.
While there are multiple methods and approaches to mantra meditation, the one that we practice at Uma Nilayam is Ananda Marga meditation, which is supported by +70 practices for physical, mental, and spiritual development.
Ananda Marga (in Sanskrit, path of bliss) is a practical and scientific system that harmoniously integrates meditation, yoga, self-care and service to others. It belongs to the tradition of Tantra Yoga, a thousands of years old science of inner development.
This meditation system encompasses all the eight steps of Ashtaunga Yoga. It strengthens our glandular and nervous systems and these systems start to support the transformation of our mind. The power of concentration gets stronger and the experience of stillness and calm in the mind deepens naturally.
How do we learn meditation?
Initiation, or diikśa in Sanskrit, is a timeless tradition of knowledge transmission between mentor and practitioner. We honor this practice as it helps us ensure that every person is guided through their own unique journey of self-discovery rather than being taught a standard program or curriculum.
Personal initiation serves as the formal threshold to the inward journey—a path activated with precision and intention through the transmission of an individual mantra.
Why do we need a mantra?
A mantra is not a generic formula. It is a living sound, assigned according to the specific nature of the individual practitioner, with the understanding that its resonance will work gradually and deeply on the layers of the mind.
To receive a mantra is like receiving a key to the door that allows the connection with ourselves.
How to get initiation?
The initiation is given by a Didi or a Dada, a nun or a monk of Ananda Marga who has undergone years of rigorous training and who has taken lifelong vows of service, simplicity, and spiritual practice. They teach from within a life entirely oriented toward the goal they are guiding towards.
The source of this lineage is Shrii Shrii Anandamurti, who systematized and transmitted these practices in the twentieth century, making the depth of classical Tantra Yoga accessible to sincere seekers everywhere, without distinction of origin or background.
